3 Delightful And Healthy Chocolate Smoothie Recipes

Smoothies are versatile, delicious and nutritious. You can use them as a meal replacement, to get more proteins before or after exercise, or to help in your weight loss/weight gain plan.

Smoothies come in a variety of tastes, colors and themes. Typical preparation time for a smoothie is just a few minutes.

The Health Benefits of Chocolate

About a decade ago, chocolate’s reputation has undergone an extreme makeover, from fattening indulgence to health food. Studies have given cocoa and dark chocolate high marks for cardiovascular benefits, including improvements in cholesterol levels, blood pressure, blood clotting, coronary artery function and insulin sensitivity. The most likely explanation for these health benefits is that the cocoa bean is rich in flavonoids — naturally occurring antioxidants found abundantly in certain fruits, vegetables and tea.

Regular commercial chocolate is high in sugar and fat content, but using unsweetened cocoa powder to make your own beverages has fantastic health benefits.

Here are our three favorite delightful and healthy chocolate smoothie recipes:

Creamy Chocolate Breakfast Smoothie Recipe

This is probably the creamiest, dreamiest chocolate smoothie you’ll have that’s totally healthy enough to call breakfast. This can also be a snack or late-night dessert.

You can easily add more cocoa powder to make the chocolate flavor even more prominent. If you don’t like bananas, you can substitute all frozen blueberries or strawberries for a similar result. You can also add some flaxseed and spinach for added nutrition without any effect on the flavor.

2 frozen ripe bananas

1/3 cup frozen strawberries (or blueberries)

2-3 heaping tablespoons cocoa powder

2 tablespoons almond butter

1.5-2 cups almond milk or soy milk

Optional: 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal

Optional: big handful of spinach

Optional: dash of stevia or agave nectar

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

If you prefer a more chocolatey smoothie, add more cocoa powder. If you prefer it sweeter, add a dash of stevia or agave nectar. If you prefer it thinner, add more almond milk or soy milk.

Energizing Chocolate Smoothie Recipe

If you need to give yourself an extra boost throughout the day, this smoothie will give you natural, sustained energy to get you through.

It’s packed with vitamins and nutrients, and because it’s chocolate, you won’t even know that it’s healthy.

1 frozen banana

1 cup frozen strawberries

½ avocado

3 pitted dates

1 cup almond milk or soy milk

2 tablespoons cocoa powder

Optional: rolled oats

If dates are not available, they can be replaced with another fruit or more banana.

Blend everything until smooth and then top with a bit of rolled oats.

Chocolate Berry Smoothie Recipe

When it comes to health, berries have an amazing reputation. Blueberries are packed with antioxidants, called anthocyanins, that help keep memory sharp as you age. Raspberries contain ellagic acid, a compound with anti-cancer properties. All berries are great sources of fiber, a nutrient important for a healthy digestive system. Studies suggest that berries may be good for your heart and your bones as well.

Berry smoothies are always a quick and easy way to make something that tastes great and has plenty of nutrients to keep your body going.

Adding chocolate, however, turns this simple recipe into something remarkable. Best of all, you can make it as a breakfast concoction or as a decadent dessert.

1 cup almond milk or soy milk

½ cup frozen blueberries

½ cup frozen raspberries

½ cup frozen blackberries

1 frozen banana

4 tablespoons cocoa powder

Blend everything together until it’s nice and smooth, and then add a light dusting of cocoa powder on top.
